Halloween
Challenge 2004 - Making the Film By Budget Film Maker
This
week I have decided to clear out the cob webs and take the MV-30I to the test,
by making a short horror film based on someone's conscious.
I have set the rules; only one other person in the film
can be used.
I must film, produce, edit and obtain the sounds for the film within the week.
This challenge will start as from Monday and I will document each day to show my
progress. Hopefully by Sunday evening (UK time 8pm) I will have a fully
completed film for Halloween.
Monday
25th October - Day 1 - Halloween Challenge - Collecting Equipment.
The
ideas has been constructed visually, and I have decided to put together a storyboard and
run the film as improvisation instead of putting together a script.
I have drawn up a storyboard with all the shots listed, that I plan to shoot. The film also has a title, Conscience, it involves a sin that a
certain individual has committed,
but his mind has not accepted the reality of it.
I have also gathered together all the relevant equipment and necessary ingredients needed for the short film. These are as follows:

1.
The Canon MV-30I and a standard
tripod 2. Garden Flashlights
500Watt 3. Gels and oven gloves for holding lightings

4. Fake blood, A Kitchen knife and a
onion.
5. Halloween Mask.
1.
The Canon MV30I is a single chip Camcorder, this will be used to film the short film. The
tripod will be used to keep the camcorder steady.
2. The Garden Flashlights are powerful lights which are normally used within
garden. This lights will be used to light up the different sets.
3. Gels and Oven Gloves - These will be used with the lighting to gain the
right look during filming, the oven gloves will be used o keep hold of the
lights as become quite hot after a while.
4. Fake Blood, A Kitchen knife and a Onion - The fake blood & Kitchen
knife will be used in the bathroom scene, and near the end of the film. The
onion will be used to create the crying effect during the film.
5. The Mask is used for the part of the Conscience which appears to be
haunting the main character within the film.
Tuesday 26th October - Day 2 - Halloween Challenge
-Planning and
Shooting it
Today
I finally got the chance to shoot certain areas of the film, here is the
storyboard with areas of the film which have been completed.
(ticked areas)
Story
Board containing 16 different shots for the film Conscience

The
drawing are very rough and are used as a guide, to how it should
be filmed. I must say I am finding it very difficult to get things right, with
only a minimum of two people
(including myself.) That means I am the Director, Producer, Camera Operator and
Actor all at the same time.... But I can't complain, as I was the one who set
the challenge.
We'll see what happens, anyway here are some of the
shots I have already completed.
SHOT
2 - The Full
Moon
SHOT 2/14 - Water dripping down the window

SHOT
3 - The outside of the
House
SHOT 7 - A shot which will be used on the TV Screen

SHOT
12 - The Stabbing of the sister.
SHOT 17 - This shot wasn't planned

SHOT
15 - Crying in the
Background
SHOT 16 1/2 - He has accepted what he has done

After
reviewing some of these shots, I must say I am very happy with the
lighting. The shots I have composed have come out better than I hoped. The
clown scene might have to be revisited again, but so far so
good.....
Wednesday
27th October - Day 3 - Halloween Challenge - Filming and Rough Cut
This
evening have been the most difficult to date, as my sister was ill, which meant
I had to compose shots of myself! Plus one of lights burnt out!!!!! Anyway, I have
completed most of the shots, some of them need reworking, but overall a
good start. Here is a
rough edit I have done, its
not quite there yet, but I hope to have another stab at it tonight.

Rough Cut with no sound
Thursday/Friday
28th/29th October - Day 4/5 - Halloween Challenge- Sound Bites!
On
the 28th, I approached a composer about producing the sound for the film, but it
going to cost me £150 per minute for the first minute and a hundred
after that. This is money I just don't have, but I know the
composer would have done an excellent job. This leaves me in a difficult
position, as I will have to complete the sound off too, making the challenge
allot harder than before. On Thursday 29th October, I was looking around
the Internet for samples that will suit the production, but there is nothing as
yet. Only two days to go....its going to be a tight one.
Saturday
30th 2004 - Day 6 - Halloween Challenge- Editing the final cut!!
I
am currently editing the finally cut of the film with shots I filmed early this
morning. The editing is slow, because I can't make up my mind on what
shots to use. It good that I have a range of shots to chose from. On top
of that, I still have the sound to do!!! I am hunting down the samples from a
audio CD I bought, DISTORTED
REALITY from the Time and Space website. Anyway, I must return to
the editing and finish this off for tomorrow at 8pm (Uk Time) it will be
completed and on online....hopefully.

I
have finally finished the film with music and sound. I will write a full analysis
on the production next month, so stay tuned.... Until then here
is the movie completed as
promised.
